Stalwarts and Half-Breeds
During Rutherford B Hayes' Presidency (1877-1881), the Republican party was split into two different factions, the Stalwarts and the Half-Breeds.
StalwartsThe Stalwarts were conservative and opposed all forms of civil service reform; they wanted to keep the original patronage system. The Stalwarts supported the protective tariff and wanted U.S Grant to run a third time in 1880. The Stalwart's most prominent leader was Roscoe Conkling of New York.

Half-BreedsThe Half-Breeds were moderately liberal and opposed many of the Stalwarts ideals. The term Half-Breeds was viewed by Stalwarts as being only half republican. Half-Breeds supported Hayes' moderate treatment towards the South and civil service reforms. The main leader of the group was James G. Blaine of Maine, but he failed to win party nomination in 1876 and 1880.
